my avocado fixation

I have a problem...
(well, probably more than one)
I can't bring myself to throw away an avocado seed....
they are just so big and fecund and full of promise

Do you actually grow avocadoes from the seeds you keep? I think I've heard that they make good indoor plants. Do you know if that's right?

yes, they do grow into plants, I've some in pots, and I know people who have eventually had fruit from them but it takes many years to get to that stage, it's hard to tell from this photo but I stick toothpicks little way into the seed so it will balance in a glass with the bottom half in water, sit it on the windowsill and then wait....and wait

I would Like to grow Avocadoes, what are the steps in doing so?

the ones I started in water (as above) were just for the novelty of watching the seed split open and the root descend while the top sprouted, I keep one in a glass on the kitchen windowsill so I can watch it - I've started others straight into pots of soil, just keep the soil damp until they sprout - it takes a few weeks - mine I keep as pot plants but I've given some away to people who've planted them in the garden and they are all growing madly, but it will be a few years until they fruit. I don't have any information on the fruiting side of things.
